Monday, January 23rd is NATIONAL PIE DAY!!!! Yes, I said that!  So tomorrow we will have Key Lime Pie, Chocolate Chess Pie, PB Pie, Cherry Pie and Raspberry Cream Pie! All pie is ONLY $3 a slice. That is ridiculous.  We’ll be open from 9:30-5:30.  Also, you can now order from http://www.farmersfreshmarket.org/downeast/market/profile/sugar-on-front-st.-bakery and have our baked goods and fresh produce and preserves delivered right to you! Awesome!  Our Valentine’s menu is listed on the previous post-order ahead so I don’t have to tell you “no”-you know how much I hate that!

Lot of stuff going on and coming up! February is when Our State Magazine comes out with our little blurb in it! Also, first weekend in Feb we will have a booth at the Wine and Chocolate Festival-should be fun! Our hours have changed-Monday-Friday 9:30-5:30 and Saturday 10-4:00. We are gearing up and filling out multitudinous Farmer’s Market apps for all over the place and the Mt. Olive Pickle Festival, Aurora Fossil Festival and the Burgaw Blueberry Festival! 

Below I will post our Valentine’s Day menu to get you in le mood!  Don’t forget January 23rd is National Pie day! Bring your Pie Eatin’ Bibs!  Speaking of which we will be helping Children at Heart adoption agency feature a pie eating fundraiser called “Eat your Heart Out” the last weekend in February-details soon!

Her art is sold in major art museum gift shops and other such classy establishments-check it out- Dottie Netherton is an artist who has worked in the
time-honored tradition of paper cutting known as
scherenschnitte (pronounced shair-en-shnit-teh) for the last two dozen years. With cuticle scissors she has crafted hundreds of delicate paper confections to adorn this tree. Rows of colorful paper mittens hang side by side with cutouts of dogs, flowers, and stars. Self-taught in the art of scissoring, Netherton was born and raised
Pennsylvania Dutch Country where the centuries-old craft of scissoring is common. Although she began by following patterns, she quickly began cutting her own original compositions such as an elaborate Noah’s Ark and her cutting tour de force, The Twelve Days of Christmas. AND we are the ONLY shop in Wilmington who carries her gorgeous cards!

                       #2 If you are getting your pie from a grocery store, Sam’s, Costco, Wal-mart don’t bother asking.

Here are the questions:        #1 What kind of fat do you use in your crust? Any baker worth their flaky crust will have an absolute favorite AND some alternatives for specific tastes. Butter, lard, Crisco and blend of butter and lard…you get the picture. 

                                                                                                        #2 Do you make the top AND the bottom crust?  Surprisingly a lot of people buy pre-made bottoms. While not a terrible thing, per se, you shouldn’t pay premium prices for shortcuts. 

                                                                                                       #3 Is the fruit fresh, canned or frozen and are the pecans local?  If the answer is canned fruit you are better off getting a pie from the freezer section of Harris Teeter and baking it off.  Flash frozen apples aren’t bad but don’t hold a candle to fresh apples.  Why not local pecans? It’s a huge NC product! 

                                                                                                      #4 Are the spices for my pie freshly grated, hand-mixed or is it a canned “pumpkin pie spice blend?” Fresh spices make a huge difference in baking! Fresh grated nutmeg is a treat of the gods! The pre-packaged spice mixes are probably like the candy that used to be in my Grandma’s freezer-leftover stocking candy from 1992.  If the answer to these questions is NOT satisfactory then re-think your order or ask for a discount!

So- while this is asking a lot, this is how I do it. No shortcuts-just straight up crazytown. ‘Cuz that’s the only way to do it.

Also Good News-I am completely booked and over-booked for Thanksgiving!
